Rather than showing combat, this 1915 color lithograph presents a uniformed soldier guiding a family through a landscape of ruin and wreckage. The sheet carries no printed text, so its meaning rests entirely on the scene. Civilians caught up in the destruction of the war were a common theme in British wartime imagery, and such pictures aimed to make the human costs of the fighting visible at home and to draw out sympathy and a sense of shared sacrifice. The title was supplied later by Library staff, since the poster itself is unlabeled, a reminder that many wartime prints circulated without a clear caption.
