Few things look as strange as a swimming pool with the water drained, and here the empty basin sits at the center, framed by rows of dressing cubicles and slender columns. Indoor public baths like this were a common civic building in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when many homes lacked bathrooms and the pool offered a clean, supervised place to swim and wash. The cubicles gave bathers privacy while changing before and after they used the water. Views of emptied pools like this one show how these buildings were laid out and constructed.
