A domed neoclassical library, its colonnaded front rising above a street-level view, shows the civic ambition that shaped many American public buildings in the early twentieth century. Neoclassical design drew on Greek and Roman forms, with columns, pediments and a central dome meant to signal learning and permanence. Libraries of this style were often funded by philanthropists such as Andrew Carnegie, who paid for hundreds of them across the country and expected towns to provide the land and upkeep. Photographed from the street, the building reads as a public monument, with its height and symmetry dominating the block around it.
