Horse theft was one of the most serious crimes on the American frontier, since a horse could mean a rancher's livelihood or a traveler's way out of a remote area. This chromolithograph shows a courtroom scene from that world, with the accused thief's trial as its focus. The print was made around 1877 by Clay, Cosack & Company, a lithography firm in Buffalo and Chicago, from a design by John Mulvany, an artist known for sporting and frontier subjects. Chromolithographs like this one were built from many stone impressions printed in layers of color, which made them affordable for mass sale and gave everyday Americans a popular view of the West.
