A clown-shaped balloon stands out among the board's usual round and teardrop envelopes, with its painted face and oversized features meant to delight a crowd. Shaped and character balloons became popular after hot air ballooning was revived in the 1960s and 1970s, when lightweight nylon fabrics made it practical to build envelopes in unusual forms. Such designs turned ascents into festival attractions at rallies and fairs, where the spectacle mattered as much as the flight. Look closely at the face and costume details to see how the builders translated a familiar performer into fabric.
