Rabbits and eggs are the stars of this Easter card, which pairs a cottontail with woven baskets heaped with colored eggs. Greeting cards like this grew popular in the United States and Europe in the late 1800s, when printers could reproduce bright chromolithographed color cheaply and families began mailing seasonal wishes to one another. The rabbit as an Easter symbol came into German and then American custom through the Osterhase, a hare said to leave eggs for children, and its pairing with eggs here reflects that folk tradition. Look closely at the basket weave and the soft shading on the fur, which show the care that went into designs meant to be kept and displayed.
