The close crop on this white marble bust draws attention to the carved face and the smooth, polished surfaces that marble takes on under careful finishing. The gallery files it under Thomas Jefferson, and many busts of the third president were made in stone from the 1780s onward, often drawing on the likeness Jean-Antoine Houdon modeled in Paris in 1789. Portrait busts like this were valued in the early republic as a way to honor a statesman, and comparing the carving with Houdon's work shows how different sculptors interpreted the same face.
