Red primulas and grape hyacinths climb through this design in a repeating pattern, with the flower fairies seeming to rise from the blossoms themselves. The image belongs to the flower fairy tradition that Cicely Mary Barker made popular in England in the 1920s, when her illustrated books and greeting cards pictured each wildflower as a small winged child. Barker's work drew on botany and folklore, and it helped set a lasting visual style for fairies as gentle, nature-bound figures rather than the mischievous creatures of older stories. Its repeating layout also suggests it was meant for decorative use, such as paper, fabric or stationery.
