Young Erne" takes its name from an old word for a large eagle, most often the white-tailed sea eagle of Europe, though the title may have been applied loosely by the photographer or the news service. The record does not say where or when the picture was taken, and the title comes from data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or caption card, which has not been independently verified. Bain's agency distributed news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives often served as quick visual records of animals, people, and places in the news. Because the record is thin, viewers should read the subject as a young bird of prey captured in the agency's documentary style, and check the title against other sources before relying on it.
