The record places this daguerreotype at California and Stockton streets in San Francisco, a corner on Nob Hill later occupied by Grace Cathedral, but the 1844 date does not fit that history well. In 1844 the settlement was still called Yerba Buena and the surrounding hills were largely undeveloped, so the title and date may not match the scene. Daguerreotypes were unique silvered copper plates made with a process announced in 1839, and each one is a single image rather than a print from a negative. Treat the date and identification as the record's claims until they are checked against other sources.
