The product name is the first clue to this broadside: a "Balm of a Thousand Flowers" promised a blend of botanical ingredients in a single remedy. Patent medicines like this were sold widely in the nineteenth century, and their makers relied on printed handbills and broadsides, with large display type, bold claims, and decorative borders, to win over buyers who often could not check the claims for themselves. Floral and botanical imagery was a common way to suggest purity and natural healing. Look closely at the lettering and layout to see how the promotion was pitched to the public.
