Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1875 was a manufacturing city and the seat of Bristol County, set on the Taunton River south of Boston. Its economy rested on iron, textiles, and silverware: foundries and locomotive works near the rail lines, cotton mills driven by the river's water power, and the long-established Reed and Barton silver company. The Old Colony Railroad ran through the city, linking its factories to Boston and to the coastal ports of Fall River and Newport, and mill towns like this drew Irish and other immigrant workers to its housing and churches. Residents knew Taunton for its foundries, its silver, and its mill dams, all within a town first settled in 1639.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Taunton, Massachusetts, drawn in 1875. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
