In 1877, Spencer, a hill town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, was still shaped by the manufacturing that had grown up along its streams over the previous century. Its wire works and card-clothing shops, which made the fine-toothed fabric that wool and cotton carding machines depended on, were its largest employers, and many households depended on a single mill for their wages. The country was still climbing out of the depression that began in 1873, and mill towns like Spencer felt the slack in orders through reduced hours and uneven pay. Local life centered on the village churches, the town hall, and the stores and shops that lined the main street, where residents knew one another and the mills by name.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Spencer, Massachusetts, drawn in 1877. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
