Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1898 was a manufacturing and port city on Newark Bay, where the Central Railroad of New Jersey served coal and freight piers at Elizabethport and factories along the Elizabeth River shipped goods by rail and water. The Singer Manufacturing Company's sewing machine works at Elizabethport was one of the best-known employers in the area, and its workers lived close to the rail yards and docks. The town also carried a colonial past, having been an early seat of government for the province of New Jersey in the seventeenth century, and its older churches and streets stood beside newer commercial blocks. Residents would have known Elizabeth first as a working harbor, with the bay shore busy with cargo and with traffic bound for New York.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Elizabeth, New Jersey, drawn in 1898. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
