Hopkinton, Massachusetts, in 1880 was a small farming and mill town in Middlesex County, roughly thirty miles west of Boston. Its economy rested on dairy and hay farms on the uplands and on modest manufacturing along the streams, where water power still turned wheels and small shops made goods for regional markets. Like many towns of its size, it was tied to the outside world by rail and by the post, and its civic life centered on the town hall, the churches, and the schools that served scattered village neighborhoods. Residents of the day would have known Hopkinton as a quiet New England community, a place that later generations would link to the start of the Boston Marathon, a tradition that began only in the 1920s.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
