Few words capture Boston's early baseball crowds better than "rooters," the common term for fans who packed the stands to cheer on the home team. The club that became the Red Sox was known for its first several seasons as the Boston Americans, and its supporters were loud, opinionated, and often fiercely loyal. Fans followed games through newspaper box scores and street-corner talk, and the ballparks of the period were built or expanded to hold them. Scenes like this one show how central the team had become to city life in the early 1900s.
