The New York State Library occupies the upper floors of the Capitol in Albany, and this view turns the camera toward the interior of that reading and reference space rather than the building's famous exterior. The library grew out of a collection that the state began assembling in the late eighteenth century, and by the time the Capitol was finished in the nineteenth century it had been given a home fit for a serious working library. Rows of tall bookcases, long reading tables, and the sheer height of the room reflect a period when public institutions were expected to look as permanent as the government they served. Notice the scale of the shelving and the careful spacing of the furniture, which show how readers were meant to move through the collection.
