The title "Treves" is an older English form of Trier, the city on the Moselle River in western Germany, and it is the name the Bain News Service recorded for this glass negative. Trier is one of Germany's oldest cities, founded by the Romans, and it still has landmarks such as the Porta Nigra gate and a large Roman amphitheater. The record gives no date and does not describe the view, and the title comes from agency caption information that has not been independently verified. Bain supplied pictures of European places and events to American newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the image is best read as part of that wider news-photo trade.
