Thanksgiving is one of the few American holidays that has been pictured for well over a century, usually as a family table, a harvest feast, or a gathering of people giving thanks. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, and Congress fixed the holiday on the fourth Thursday of November in 1941, which helped turn a patchwork of local observances into a shared national ritual. Images from this subject often reflect the ideas of home, plenty, and gratitude that artists and printmakers wanted to emphasize in their own time. When looking at a picture like this, it is worth noticing what the scene chooses to show as abundant and who is gathered around it.
