Berkeley Springs, in Morgan County, West Virginia, had been drawing visitors for its warm mineral springs since the colonial era, and by 1889 its economy rested largely on the bathing and hotel trade. Visitors arrived from Washington, Baltimore, and the Shenandoah Valley to soak in the spring waters, which many believed could ease rheumatism and other ailments. The town also served as the county seat, so its courthouse, shops, and churches stood alongside the bathhouses and boarding houses that catered to seasonal guests. Life in the place followed the rhythm of the summer season, when the streets filled with carriages and the hotel dining rooms were busiest. In this view, the town appears as its residents knew it, a small resort community in the Eastern Panhandle that lived as much on its reputation for healing waters as on local farming and trade.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
