Davis, in Tucker County in the mountains of northeastern West Virginia, was a railroad and timber town when this 1898 bird's-eye view was drawn. The West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway, backed by Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, for whom the town was named, had pushed lines into the high country in the 1880s and 1890s, and the rails brought in capital and outside workers. Lumbering and tanning drew on the hemlock and hardwood forests that covered the surrounding ridges, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with those cutting operations. Residents in 1898 would have known Davis as a mountain stop on a new line, a place where the trains carried out bark, timber, and coal and carried in goods, mail, and newcomers.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Davis, West Virginia, drawn in 1898. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
