The title, "A Little High Strung," plays on the phrase for a nervous, easily startled temper, and the humor rests on a horse that is as jittery as the words suggest. Thomas Worth, whose signature appears on the image, drew many comic horse and sporting subjects for Currier & Ives, a New York firm that sold inexpensive prints to a broad middle-class public in the 1870s. This example was published around 1879 as a hand-colored lithograph, a finishing step that gave the printed design brighter tones before sale.
