Edison is shown inspecting the E 2, a submarine, in a picture whose caption card gives no date. The American Press Association held the copyright, which suggests a news photograph meant for newspaper distribution rather than a studio portrait. Edison's public role in naval matters grew during the First World War, when he served on the Naval Consulting Board, formed in 1915 to bring civilian inventors and engineers into defense planning, including submarine detection. Pictures like this one showed the public an inventor working on military technology at a time when the navy depended on outside expertise.
