Thomas Edison was among the most photographed men of his era, and this print, dated May 13, 1924, shows him at seventy-seven, decades into a career that began with telegraph work in the 1860s. The caption card, whose entries are unverified, links the picture to New York University and lists sculpture among its subjects, which may point to a formal portrait or a record of a likeness made at the time. By 1924 Edison was best known for the phonograph and the practical incandescent lamp, and his West Orange laboratory had become a model for industrial research.
