A holiday postcard, titled simply "Thanksgiving," this piece belongs to a large group of greeting cards that were mailed in huge numbers during the early 1900s, when picture postcards were at the height of their popularity. Lincoln first proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, and the holiday was not fixed to the fourth Thursday of November until the 1940s. Cards like this one were often printed with harvest scenes, autumn foliage, and cornucopias, and they show how families marked the season by sending wishes across town or across the country.
