Sounds to me like Qillicum (or was it Quillicum?). It was located on Davie (or is it Davies?) across the street from the Sands Hotel near Denham (again, is it D-e-n-h-a-m?). That's down by English Bay. I remember it being "downstairs," and yes, you sat sort-of in a trench, but it was an elevated trench (above the floor level). The place was decorated with native American items. The food was excellent. We had a smoked fish platter that had more kinds of fish than I can remember. It was a house speciality. We couldn't finish it. That was some years ago, perhaps 1988, maybe even a few years earlier. I'd also be curious if it still exists. Barry Nothing is as it seems.
