Head towards downtown on Puyallup Ave, turn right on Pacific Ave, and go until you reach Harmon Brewing. Family-friendly brewpub, pub eats, decent selection of beers. Pierce Transit will get you there; you can walk down to the Transit Center by the Tacoma Dome to find a bus, or just take a rather long walk.

I second the suggestion of the Harmon. It's near good museums & University, about as interesting as downtown Tacoma gets.

If you don't have that kind of time or legs, it's about 3 blocks to freighthouse square -- which is not a square at all, but it is a 3-block-long recycled freight warehouse. It's the green building a block up from Puyallup Ave and a couple blocks toward town from the train station. It has a food court with quite a decent variety, and it has a few other good restaurants. My favorite is 32 Silvers, a Thai place that's not just like every other Thai restaurant on the coast.
