I've never had rude service there, and the omelettes (I think) are great. (Generally, either their Socrates Revenge, the Vesuvio, or I "build my own".) Also good pastries. And I've been having weekend breakfast there for over 12 years. I will say that I've had some some so-so dinners there; and I don't want to claim that they're haute cuisine, or make the most outstanding breakfasts I've ever had. They are, however, a consistently good neighborhood breakfast place with attentive, pleasant service and good breakfast and lunch dishes. And for me, they have the added benefit of being within walking distance of my home. I don't think I'd regularly drive there for breakfast if I lived on Capital Hill (Coastal Kitchen) or Eastlake (14 Carrot Cafe); but for the Wallingford/Freemont/UW District, it's a very nice local place for breakfast. PS One pointer for weekend brunch at Julia's: I try and get there before 8:30 -- quieter, the rush hasn't started, and it's mostly us locals. PPS Re: Mae's, I would agree with most of the criticisms other people have made in this newsgroup. I've had so-so service there. Let's put it this way: I've *never* had Mae's-type service at Julia's in Wallingford. "Nothing beats the taste sensation when maple syrup <*SLAP*> collides with ham!" -- Agent Dale Cooper Jeff Meyer

Julia's
I couldn't disagree more. Over the past decade or so, I've had nothing but mediocre service at Julia's and, a couple of times, it's been down right rude. One time we were there with a party of six (so the tip is automatic) and, although the place was not completely full, the waiter was impatient. He came by to take our order after we'd only been there a few minutes and we said we needed a little more time; he walked away in a huff. About 5 minutes later, we told him we still need another minute and he said "You know, I haven't got all day" and walked off. I've never understood this kind of treatment; it's a "service" industry! That said, I also have to mention that I've always found the food just ok...nothing special! David Randall Yellow Tail Records [email removed] http://members.aol.com/ytrecords

(snip) I think the thing with Julia's is that it would be a decent enough place to go if it weren't so busy. Conversely, that's why many people go ("ooh, look at that line--it *must* be good!"). Then, when the food/service doesn't knock one out, one feels somehow suckered, like the crowds are some sort of false advertising. In fact, I've had many a reasonable meal there, but only when the wait and crowds aren't hideous (same with the formerly-Julia's 14 Carrot). Knowing when to go certainly makes the overall experience much nicer. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Music, Coffee and Baseball | "When we win the World Series, I'm Home Page: | gonna grab the mic and say, 'What www.accessone.com/~michaelc | do you think of mediocrity now?'" -Mike Timlin
I have had to deal with julias on many ocasions (perhaps 20 times) and
on every ocasion they have been rude and impolite. I refuse to eat
there but unfortunatly my job requires that I deal with there staff on a
regular basis.
I have never found there food all that apitizing and there prices
are hefty for what they serve. I have been in the resturant several
times and (even when it is not busy) seen the waiters treating the
customers poorly.
p.s. I am refering to the Julias in ballard. The one downtown is
worse.
