I dropped the "southern" where I meant to also include it - as in "authentic southern Italian food at Gaspare's...[etc.]" No implication of "non-real" Italian, north or south, was intended there. The idea is that Beppo's serves southern-Italian-style eats in a rather cartoonish quasi-Italian-American inspired setting, as contrasted with Calabrian eats in a simply decorated place like Il Paesano, without all the fuss, noise, and garishness of Beppo's. That said, I don't dislike Beppo's as a place to take a party of folks (four minimum unless leftovers are desired!) for big platters of Italian-style eats to share. The place is quite family- friendly, too. But those *crowds* at weekends are huge!
