I've been away from DC for a few years so I can't promise that any of these places still exist let alone that they have maintained their standards of excellence. La Fonda at 1639 R st. NW was good when I lived in Washington. So was Enriqueta's at 2811 M Street NW (Georgetown).

Crisfield's at 8012 Georgia Avenue(Silver Spring) was great 8 years ago. Good Luck and Bon appetit!!

A FANTASTIC DC RESTAURANT---
There is a fantastic restaurant that opened rather recently (a year or so) in NW DC. It's called The Red Sage. Chef Mark Miller from the Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe opened this place, and the food is creative south western- spicy and delicious. It's not cheap, but because of the quality and quantity of the food, I consider it a great value. Also, the million-dollar interior decoration makes the place an experience just to be in. (Adobe booths, exposed wood all over, painted plates, etched glass, all southwestern motif. It's almost sickening, but fun.) Lots of chile dishes, excellent poultry and seafood, and a wonderful vegetarian sampler entree. Make a reservation, and get ready for a great meal...
