Washington, DC
sangria in D.C.?
Here's my list of Sangria joints that also feature flamenco shows: La Costa del Sol 710 King St Old Town Alexandria (703)836-4000 Spanish restaurant. Flamenco shows about once a month. Formerly of El Bodegn fame, dancer Ana Martinez is accompanied by guitarist Paco de Mlaga. (Closest Metro stop: King St) La Bodega 2039 Wilson Blvd Arlington (703)522-6622 Mediterranean cuisine. Flamenco shows on Fridays and Saturdays. Dancer Joana del Ro is accompanied by guitarist Toms or Torcuato Zamora. (Closest Metro stop: Court House) El Bodegn 1637 R St NW (202) 667-1710 Sorry folks. After more than thirty years of regularly presenting flamenco shows, El Bodegn has closed down as of Tuesday March 18, 1997. A new El Bodegn may be opening in the Fall in a new location across the street from the new opera house. Taberna del Alabardero 1776 I St NW (202) 429-2200 Spanish restaurant. Shows occasionally. Around March and October, the Taberna brings a flamenco cuadro down to DC to perform for usually about 5 or 6 nights as part of a prix fixe dinner. Some of the previously invited artists: La Repompa, Contratiempo with guitarist Vicente Corts(!), Paco de Mlaga with singer Toms de San Julian, Manolo Leiva with guitarist/singer Marija Temo. This is a very expensive restaurant so don't say I didn't warn you, but the high quality flamenco show usually justifies the expense! (Closest Metro stop: Farragut West) Restaurant Andalucia 4931 Elm St Bethesda MD (301) 907-0052 Spanish restaurant. Shows occasionally. Live guitar music on Sundays by Torcuato Zamora. Past performers include dancers Joana del Ro, Natalia Montelen, Ana Martinez, Susana Lorenzo; guitarists Marija Temo, Paco de Mlaga, Jesus Serrano; singers Manolo Leiva and Marija Temo. They also have another restaurant by the same name in Rockville, but I haven't been there myself yet. (Closest Metro stop: Bethesda) Jaleo 480 7th St NW (202) 628-7949 Spanish tapas bar. Brief Sevillanas shows on Wednesday nights. Excellent tapas! (Closest Metro stop: Archives/Navy Memorial) Sevilla Restaurant 4700 Eastern Ave Baltimore, MD (410) 522-5092 Flamenco shows every other Saturday. A small restaurant with plenty of good seats for the flamenco show. Dancers Natalia Montelen and Edwin Aparicio are accompanied by guitarist Enrique Jova and singer Guillermo Juan-Christie. Telephone for more info/reservations. To my knowledge, this is the ONLY flamenco show in Baltimore! OK, so maybe Tio Pepe's used to have one...but no more!!! -Michael Perez [email removed] http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/6196/
