Jim...

Two of my favorites:
Mike's American Grill; Backlick Rd in Springfield, Va.
    Excellent food...
Red, Hot, & Blue; Wilson Blvd in Roslyn, Va.
    Good Memphis BBQ

One place that's on my D.C. "must do list" is the _Red Sage_. The Red Sage was orig. recommended to me by a friend-of-a-friend that happens to be the head chef in a southwestern cuisine restaurant in Phoenix.

The Red Sage is one of the best southwestern cuisine restaurants I've ever been to. Fairly upscale, prices on the exp. side ($15 - $25/entree -- not too bad for D.C. really :-) and you'll need a reservation.

The current issue of Washingtonian magazine (likely available at large newstands throughout the USA) has its annual list of Readers' Favorite 200 restaurants. Red Sage, Red Hot and Blue, the Inn at Little Washington, etc. are in the top ten.

Ivy's Place is the most congested restaurant that I've ever been to in DC and it was mostly empty the night that we were there. The Bethesda branch of the restaurant does give you enough room to sit comfortably.
