i've heard lots of great things about udupi, but haven't been there
yet myself. another place to try is amma's vegitarian cafe, in vienna. i've tried to go there twice, myself (once when my father was in town on business and craving some good south indian food), and they've closed early on both of those days, but across the street is aditi (i think that was the name), owned by the same people. aditi is a north indian restaurant, mostly, but they do have a few south indian dishes, including a good south indian thali with dosa, idli, sambar, etc.; the aforementioned father found it more than acceptable, and i've heard great things about amma's, so i would definitely try it (assuming it is open...) if udupi is (as it is for me) very far away.

Since you'll be near the White House, try Bombay Club. Very posh. Also kind of expensive, but they used to have a Sunday champagne brunch that was a terrific bargain. It's on Connecticut, near Lafayette Park.

Bombay Club (expensive) at 805 Connecticut, Bombay Bistro (inexpensive) in Rockville, Bombay Palace (mid-price) on K around 20th, and Haandi in Bethesda. I believe Bombay Bistro and Haandi also have branches in Northern Virginia.

My family took me to a wonderful birthday dinner tonight at "White Tiger" on Capitol Hill near Union Station. Very good food and service, along with optional outside dining. Just a few blocks from the Union Station Metro.

Bombay Bistro: corner of 123 and Lee Highway in Fairfax

Haandi: West Broad Street in Falls Church. This is closer to DC.
