I've been to Hunan No. 1 a few times, and definitely
liked it a lot, and Hope Key is far and away my favorite Chinese restaurant in NoVA. I've never been to Hsian Foong, though, since Hope Key _is_ just around the corner (so is Hunan No. 1, but they do Dim Sum, which Hope Key doesn't); how would you describe their food?
Also, all of these restaurants are technically in
Clarendon, not Ballston, as the original poster asked; does anyone know of good Chinese (or Thai or Vietnamese, for that matter) places in Ballston proper?

(While I'm asking questions--I remember going to a
Lebanese (? I think) place in Ballston called Food Factory a while ago, but the last time I got a craving for it, I couldn't find it anymore. I later found a similar place with the same name in College Park; does anyone know if the two are related, and if the one in Ballston still exists?)

The only north African place I know there is A Taste of Casablanca. That's Moroccan. Are you saying there's a restaurant I haven't noticed?
