Last night, Valentine's night, my husband and I ate dinner at La Ferme, at 7101 Brookville Road, just a little bit above Chevy Chase Circle in Bethesda. I can heartily recommend it on all accounts

We had no idea what it would be like; the advertisement in the Washingtonian was absolutely deceptive. The ad seemed to indicate "fun" French food, maybe like the old restaurant in Georgetown where the waiters used rollerskates. Thank God it wasn't at all like that.

When I reached the front door, I could see that it was charming. That impresing was confirmed upon entering - a wonderful large, high room, beautifully decorated in French country decor. The tables on teh ground floor were set at two different levels to provide intimacy. There was a nice fireplace, and an excellent pianing softly singing French standards in an obviously authentic accent. The table had pink stemmed wine glasses, fresh pink flowers and little oil lamps. A good sign.

The bread was fresh, the butter was unsalted, and the water service impeccable. So was the food. And I'm fussy! My husband had a fine lobster bisque, and I had mussels poached with leeks and served in a silken ream saue. Yum. The main courses were excellent, and show the Norman origin of the chef - lots of hearty things with Calvados.I had potatoes Anna and a charming pea mousse among the veggies they offered. The deserts were excellent, although I did ask if they could make a Sabayon saue for fresh fruit. (If they had any Marsala in the house, it would have been easy.) They didn't, so I had a lovely almont tarte with Chambord. With 2 glasses of win, one soup, one appetizer, two main courses and two desserts, the bill, exclusive of tip, but including tax came to $77. Truly a bargain! The Maitre D', Michael, used to be at the Hay Adams - you may recognize him. Do enjoy this treasure - Susan Meehan

[good stuff about La Ferme in Chevy Chase deleted]

I too heartily recommend La Ferme for a quiet romantic interlude. I found the price tag to be moderately expensive -- about $60 for two without wine. The service was absolutely impeccable and the atmosphere was light and airy. The food was excellent, both in taste and in presentation. Definitely worth the trip.
