Since I just posted a very negative review of Le Relais,
I thought I might as well post something positive to raise my spirits. So I'd like to heartily recommend Caribbean Grill on Lee Highway (a little east of the Washington/Lee exit on 66). Very good jerk chicken (not as spicy as the Cuban place on Hungerford in Bethesda, but just as flavorful), pretty good jerk pork, and a few other assorted entrees, all available very inexpensively. (For those who really want a good value, get the "best value meal" to go: rather than just giving you two normal sides, they put the chicken in a large styrafoam container, and then heap as much of your chosen sides in as they can--often enough for a couple of meals in themselves.)
They do have a tendency to run out of some dishes towards
the end of the day; I was there one evening last week at just before 9 (when they close), and they had no white meat chicken, no spinach, and no baked yucca con mojo. Sometimes this turns out to be an advantage, however: I've had them dig out and reheat some "extra" black bean soup that they had made earlier, and it was amazing in that way that only thick reheated soups that have had a chance to let all of their flavors meld can be. I've also occasionally had them make up some fresh spinach as a side; normally the spinach is a little overcooked for my tastes, but when they make it fresh, it's a thing of beauty--just barely wilted, and seasoned with a little parmesean cheese. Either way, the spinach is very good, as are the red beans and yellow rice, and the black beans.
