We ate at the Alamo tonight. Upon first glance at the menu, I was skeptical at the small selection available. However, as the platters arrived, my skepticism disappeared--along with the food. My wife had mesquite beef. It was tender and juicy and very tasty. I had the combination (beef and chicken strips) build-your-own fajitas with grilled onions and peppers. The platter included a large dollop of sour cream and chopped tomatoes with cilantro. Both platters came with copious amounts of perfectly prepared black beans and rice (not mixed). Everything was served nice and hot. The don't have a children's menu. However, we asked if they could prepare a plain quesadilla for my daughter. They did, and piled a bunch of black beans on the platter, too, for $4.50. Not bad for something that's not on the menu. I failed to ask for salsa--I like my Mexican food hot. I suppose if we had gotten chips, salsa would've been in ready supply. All told, however, even without salsa, everything was delicious, and we left three nearly-empty platters. Food was served promptly and competently--the cold beer was brought an instant before the hot food, just as we'd asked. The waiter didn't write down the orders, and had a bout of temporary amnesia regarding my wife's and my orders. However, rather than play macho and try to guess, he came back and asked. He probably stops and asks for directions when driving, too. We don't care for entertainment while eating (too loud and distracting for a family meal, usually), and had we known that the Alamo has live entertainment, we probably would've been scared off. However, we got there at about 6:10, and a blues combo was setting up the mikes and equipment for a performance that was to begin at 7:00. We were out of there by 6:55, so we missed the performance--and the noise we anticipated. In retrospect, since we'd finished eating, a few minutes of blues might not've been too bad. However, if you don't want music while eating--or if you do--call and ask about the music schedule ahead of time. In sum, we liked it, and we'll probably go again. It was a very pleasant Sunday evening dinner.
