When we were in Charlottesville in June we discovered a downtown mall (a closed-off street originally, I suppose). There were all kinds of interesting places to eat. We just wanted a quick lunch so we stopped at a place called Pockets, which satisfied both the carnivore (my husband) and the vegetarian (me) with delicious soups, salads, sandwiches. (And if there's a cat lover in the family, stop at The Cat House for a great selection of cat-motif items!) The restaurant we ate in when we were in Lexington wasn't very memorable. In Lexington be sure to visit Virginia Born & Bred for the best selection of made-in-Virginia items and some of the nicest staff around -- although it seems that *everyone* in Virginia is that way! We also recommend passing through Goshen Pass.

If you don't have a copy of the Insider's guide to the Blue Ridge Mountains, try to get a copy at bookstore, magazine store, or library
-- they sell it everywhere in Virginia. LOTSA good suggestions for places to stay, eat, play, shop, sightsee, etc. Have a good trip! - JB
