I was up at U.Va in Charlottesville, VA recently
and happened upon a new copy of BITES, a restaurant guide to the area. Under Barbecue they had the following listings.

Homeboy's BBQ
Pork, Ribs, Beef & Chicken. Pies & chili.
814 Cherry Ave. Shopping Center 984-5654 M-Sat 11am-8pm Takeout only.

Hog Heaven
Hickory Smoked Hand-Pulled Meat.
Monday is Rib Night.
503 Monticello Road 295-8687
M-Th 11-9pm, F-Sat 11-11pm

Big Jim's Burgers & BBQ
Great C&W Jukebox.
2104 Angus Rd. 296-8283
Daily,11am-varies

I haven't been to any of these but would like an opinions or thoughts anyone that has could offer. I think I'll try Homeboy's next time up.

The only other BBQ I know of nearby that I've been to personally is Blue Ridge Pig in Nellyford which is woodsmoked & quite good. It's on Rt 151 off of Rt. 6. And also the "Pig & Steak Too!" aka Dew Drop Inn in Scottsville, which has a pretty good pork bbq sandwich but is a tad heavy on the sauce. They do have a good jukebox though and booths.

In a non-BBQ mode,
another place I've driven by but never stopped at yet, but that always peaks my curiosity is the SCHNITZELHOUSE described in Bites as "Swiss & German Cuisine in a Heidi-esque atmosphere. ...like some Von Trapp family retreat. Even fondue ( with prior notice )." Fontaine Ave. 293-7185. Hmm?, sounds interesting but expensive. Then again, there are more millionares per capita in Charlottesville than anyplace else in the US outside of maybe Aspen or Lake Tahoe.

cheers,
cap'n ron

Big Jim's has huge swings in quality. Not a lot of smokiness, but sometimes pretty good. The platters come with a MOUNTAIN of fries.

I'd start with Homeboys and then go to Hog Heaven.

The SCHNITZELHOUSE has been there for at least 20 years and has solid, but unspectacular German food. Worth a try for lunch sometime, but not worth going out of your way for.

As soon as you do sample Hog Heaven and Homeboys let us know!

(And I'm sorry to hear about your aversion to Pierce's in Lightfoot.)

Hope that helps.
