It's funny how every posts requests here, and we all read them. Well, my daughter goes to U of Virginia at Charlottesville. That little town has some good eating places, but we haven't found them all. Some that we have tried - C&O - very good The Hardware Store - so,so Tastings - fun for the flights of wine Lots of places on the corner - typical college student stuff Oregano Joe's - pretty good Another italian place that I can't name right now - good Now, can anyone give us some recommendations for some other places for real good food? (If any of you UVA types know my daughter, don't hassle her about the old man posting here. Since I went to Tech, I know no better.)

Good food in Charlottesville is an oxymoron. I'd suggest the Continental Divide, on Main st., and maybe Monsoon Cafe for dinner, on the downtown mall. Otherwise, drive to DC or Raleigh/Durham with your daughter :) Adam
Don't forget Bodo's (2 locations, one on 29 and one on Preston Ave) for the best Bagels. Too bad they don't open earlier in the a.m. but great nevertheless. From Student Health (hoping your daughter stays healthy)!!!,
Also there is a super place for breakfast, and it serves great Italina food too, the Italinavilla on Emmet ST near Lambeth, it serves breakfast all day and has pan pizza and lasagna to die for, along with fetucin alfredo and stronboli. Check it out! Aristea, borrowing her sister's e-mail address

Too bad they don't open earlier in Okay, Bodos _is_ good, and honest, but come on, you want me to say that Pie in The Sky, Edgar's, and Southern Culture are good restaurants? I'd rather eat the fried chicken at the Ole Virginia Fried Chicken place-- at least it's honest and straightforward. I'm not asking for haute cuisine d00d, I'm suggesting that for GOOD food, one might travel a little further than Charlottesville, if one wanted to have a good meal, _for the food_. Adam

Edgar's, across from the train station... Southern Culture, right down the street (West Main) the newly revamped Virginian is good for casual food and a great atmosphere (on the corner) Boar's Head Inn...South Street... Feel free to e-mail me if you want to know any details...
So sorry if my harsh critique of the Charlottesville restaurant scene bothers anyone, but there are people who agree so lets celebrate diversity and work together... Why not try _Continental Divide_ (make sure the chef, Rachel, is cooking) or _Monsoon Cafe_ (dinner, not lunch) If you can drive the 20 miles south of town, _Boccee_ in Scottesville, is good, although I've heard it is going to be sold soon. All of these places provide honest food, cooked with care by people who also like to eat. enjoy! Adam
As an alumni at Virginia(graduated in '90), I would agree that there was not alot of "great" restuarants in the town. However, two fun restaurants were Full Moon Diner and Duner's out in Ivy. Also, the Hardware Store of 29 was alot fun while I was there.
Old farts and sophisticated offspring seem to agree that the C&O niche is now occupied by The Metropolitan, in the downtown mall. I haven't actually tried the C&O, but have been several times to its basement neighbor, the C&O Bistro -- not the same niche, but appealing in its own right -- upon entering, you see the empty dining room of the C&O (menu in French) and wonder why nobody ever seems to eat there anymore. The departure of teh original chef? The prices? The food? The French?
The Metropolitan on the downtown mall is quite good. Adam
My boyfriend and I went to the Clifden Inn in February for my birthday. The food was wonderful. I especially liked the mushroom soup. We had a choice of veal or swordfish for the main course. We also happen to pick the night they were hosting the Albermarle County Welcome Wagon Club so the place was packed!! But the service was still very good and the chef gave my boyfriend tips on how to properly cook swordfish when he came to talk to our table. i think it would have been a very romantic place to eat dinner minus the Welcome Wagon. The rooms were definitely romantic with fireplaces, four-poster beds with big fluffy down comforters, and candles. I would definitely go back. Oh, there is also afternoon tea when you check-in with awesome pastries and breakfast had lots of fresh fruit and this was February. Anyway, I hope this helps. --Kristina
