The Good Food Guide starts by saying that the couple who own the Walnut Tree (I forget their names), have in the last thirty years turned the Walnut Tree from being a small pub and restaurant on a B road outside Abergavenny, to being what it is today: a small pub and restaurant on a B road outside Abergavenny. The B road in question is the B4521.
We went on Saturday and both had Vincigrassi to start with. I was told that this would be like God crying on your tongue. Actually it was more like Lasagne. But it was incredibly good Lasagne, made with Parma ham and porcini and topped with Parmesan and a generous amount of truffle. Jean had Brodetto to follow, a fish stew with about ten kinds of fish, four gargantuan langoustine and about half a dozen mussels in a very strongly flavoured broth, (definitely saffron, maybe another spice?) and I had a pigeon with wild mushrooms (morels, chanterelles and porcini) in an extraordinary vin santo sauce. Absolutely fantastic.
The place has a wonderful atmosphere, it isn't at all stuffy or reverential the way places can become. And we had three courses, wine and coffee and spent 40 quid each.United Kingdom
