This *may* be OT, as the meal I had was eaten somewhere between St Malo & Portsmouth, but as there isn't an english.channel.food+drink.restaurants NG, here goes...

We went to the main restaurant of the Duc de Normandie in the evening returning from France & opted for the "buffet" option at £14.50 per person.

The first course was a "help yourself to as much as you want & keep going back until you're stuffed" cold buffet. This doen't sound very interesting, but the choice of nosh was excellent. There was basket about two foot six long and a foot wide piled high with langoustines, and another basket next to it full of huge prawns. There was thick-sliced roast beef, lamb chops, ham.... salads, pasta... crudites. Given the usual cost of seafood, I'd had my £14.50's worth ten minutes after sitting down.

The main courses were a bit mundane but OK - I had chicken in a cream-based sauce, my wife had red snapper.

The buffet again came up trumps for the 3rd & 4th courses - 8 or 9 French cheeses from the smooth & creamy to the distinctly smelly, plus plenty of breads, crackers and so on. Puds - about a dozen tartes, mousses, gateaux, trifles etc. We shared portions of most of them.

To drink we had a bottle of Tavel a/c rose - a bit pricey at £13, but beautifully fruity & clean. I couldn't resist a half bottle of red Bordeaux to go with the cheese - about £4.50 - very reasonable.

The service was efficient & friendly. They even brought an extra plate & spoon for my 2-year-old daughter without my asking.

All in all, one of the best eating experiences I've had for the money. I've heard that the restaurants on other ships in the fleet are equally good.

PS I am in no way connected with Brittany Ferries apart from being an occasional customer.
