I had the good fortune of eating in a (not to be named) restaurant in Gosport a few days ago and all I can say is "bloody hell, the food really is the dog's proverbials"!

The decor was rough and ready - thin rubber feel laminated (?) table mats, no curtains, no candles nor decoration of any fancy variety. It almost felt like an up market greasy spoon. The prices were also very high - crazily high by the standards of the area - a Meat Jalfreizi like curry for almost £7 without rice or bread for example is almost indefensible. But there was nowhere else to go that wasn't crowded.

Anyway, the food itself was absolutely amazing - by *far* the best curry I've ever tasted in terms of complex spicing and perfectly balanced taste along with tender meat and sauce of crafted consistency. The chef is clearly a gifted man who took time and effort to prepare and present our meals. One was mild and one was hot - each had a unique character which suggested that a generic sauce had been shunned in favour of a genuine and successful attempt at high quality cuisine. Really, really good.

For me the lesson is not to be put off by appearances - the place may appear to be quite shabby but the food was/is bloody wonderful. I've been to my (now) 2nd favourite restaurant since then and despite being clearly excellent it simply doesn't come close to the wonders of the Gosport curry "caf" in terms of food quality and taste. The service however is far superior and the pricing much more reasonable!

The only problem is that I can't afford to eat there on anything approaching a regular basis - also that I'm not in the area that often. The pricing of the food suggests that the manager knows he provides incredible tasting food - I can't emphasise how expensive the food is by the standards of the area - Portsmouth/Gosport having very reasonably priced Indian Restaurants as a rule.

If anyone is planning on visiting Gosport then I would be more than pleased to recommend the place via email.

My favourite curry restaurants are the small cafes in the Asian rag trade area near Victoria Station in Manchester. Scruffy decor but good Asian home cooked meals without breaking the bank.
