hello,

I ate last week in Ramsay's in Chelsea (2 Michelen stars, very expensive) and thought it was excellent in terms of food, service and as a comfortable venue. Ransome's Dock in Battersea has very good food, a casual atmosphere, an interesting wine list and reasonable prices. Full reviews of half a dozen London restaurants on my own website http://www.wine-pages.com or try Graham Tigg's website at http://www.cix.co.uk/~gtigg/ for lots of LOndon restaurants reviewd.

It's quite difficult to make recommendations on two counts. The first is that we don't know what you like :-), and the second is that there is just so much to choose from. You might be a little disappointed in service after LA (Californian restaurant service makes me feel a little uncomfortable - you may find your treatment a little more distant than you are used to - we can't help it, we're Brits)

If you're looking for the ulimate foodie thing then I'd go to Chez Nico (which is currently a room in an hotel but the cooking is none the worse for that) or venture out of London a bit to Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons (which has rooms) or the Waterside Inn at Bray. Take lots of money with you.

I had what I think was the best steak I've ever eaten at Bibendum (which is emphatically _not_ a steak restaurant) last month. If you've the time you might put your head around the door there. Have a look at the website.

I see you've read the guides. Just make sure that one of them is "The Good Food Guide 1999" published by Which? Books ISBN 0-85202-717-6 (GBP 14.99). It's an annual roundup of restaurants in the UK ranging from reliable to incredible, and it's based on reports from the people who buy it and anonymous inspection. They do sensible things like suspending the scoring when the Chef changes.

Have fun (you will)

Wheelers just off Regent St serves excellent seafood. Almost next door is Veeraswarmys Indian which is good, Italian try San Lorenzo on Beauchamp (pronounced Beecham) Place. Highly recommended. If you can't get in there this little street is full of Restaurants of all types.
