A couple of observations about London restaurants and Paul Taylor's posting. These opinions are a year old but based on plenty of experience '87-'94.

dell'Ugo
I would avoid it. I've never had good food or good servive there. Try 190 Queensgate and Bistro 190 upstairs and see what Anthony Warrell-Thompson can really do.

La Tante Claire (which is on Royal Hospital Road and cunningly set back so it's easy to miss) Sell your mother to eat here. Pierre Koffman will take you to heaven, and charge you accordingly. One dinner I ate here about three years ago cost nearly 500 pounds for four (OK, someone else was paying and the wine was awfully good) and I can still remember everything I ate. Nico at 90 (in the Grosvenor House Hotel) is a similar experience. Both are lunchtime "bargains."

Bibendum
The cod with saffron mash exemplifies what is so wonderful about this place: so damn simple and so damn perfect. The same with the brandade. As an irrelevent side note, tables for two are a little crowded, so go with three or four.

From the rest of the Conran Empire: Liked Le Pont de la Tour and the Blueprint at Butler's Wharf, but disliked Cantina dell Ponte and Quaglino's.

After all that, my heart jumps a little for Daquise. I went to Imperial Colleg and this was the best affordable local place, with delicious stodge and pastries and waitresses who almost TELL you what you're going to order.

If you like Chines food, the Poon's places (especially in Chinatown) are good if you can figure out what to eat: resort to the old Chinatown standby of pointing to the fabulous smelling dish that just went by on its way to the Chinese family in the corner and say "I'll have what they're having"!

Please post London's latest and greatest (like Les Saveurs, just getting up a head of steam as I left town) as I will be spending June there.
