On the other hand if you're visiting Britain come to London and go to the Seashell in Lisson Grove, or many of the others in the previous postings, and learn what Harry Ramsden didn't.

I suggest you continue with the self restraint. No-one who believes food should have texture as well as taste could possibly enjoy mushy peas. The guacamole thing came from an incident involving Peter Mandelsson (sp?), Labour's spin doctor. At a conference in the north, he and some of the other lads, wanting to demonstrate their solidarity with whippet owners, went out for fish and chips. Mandelsson said: "Oh, and I'll have some of the guacamole there". He was pointing at the mushy peas. Labour
*hate* this story, and maintain it isn't true, but those who have vouched in print for its veracity include John Prescott and the woman who served them -- although she did acknowledge that she could hardly understand a word the toffee-nosed git uttered

I like guacamole myself, although I was a bit taken aback by a menu item in London: "avocado guacamole". Ever since, I've been wondering if there's some other kind I'm missing out on

Now, the other night I stayed at the Greenway in Shurdington, near Cheltenham. I had scallops with bubble and squeak, followed by red mullet. That *was* a meal. If anyone's near there sometime soon, I recommend it

You mean the place near the Orange Tree. many hazy memories of it. Many times have I caught the train down to Richmond, into th Orange Tree for a gallon or so of Youngs. Get some F+C, onto the Twickenham Special Buses - watch the Rugby (especially enjoy seeing the Scots get stuffed) - back to the Orange tree for another gallon and get another bag-of-chips for the train home. Can recommend the F+C shop.

Geale's and Costa's, both just off Notting Hill Gate, are very good. Geale's is a bit pricy but actually fries the fish in dripping.
