Try the Bar Italia in Frith Street, the grandaddy of all the nineties espresso bars. It's been there for yonks and has a manually operated Gaggia.

Excellent coffee, and no problems with a macchiato (which for those who don't know, is an espresso with a spot of frothy milk in it).

I don't know anywhere else in England that can produce an espresso macchiato without askance glances and/or having to be given in-depth instructions. Which is not to say they don't exist.

That's England. However, I was briefly in Glasgow last week, and while waiting for the train back to England I went into a coffee bar directly opposite Glasgow Central station. I'm afraid I can't remember what it's called. Think it had an R in the name, and it seemed to be some sort of American chain/franchise. I'd ordered an espresso before reading the menu. Unfortunately. To my great surprise, there listed on the menu was Caffe macchiato!

Nice parma ham, tomato and mozzarella sandwich on foccaccia too.
