Edinburgh Curries

Anyone venturing to Edinburgh for the Festival (etc) should try the Brittania Spice restaurant near Leith Docks (and the formerly royal yacht of the same name).

We had Chicken Ceylon, Ginger Murgh, Bhindi Bhaji, plain Naan and Pulao Rice and even that small amount - plus the service - was enough to convince us it was one of the very best. We'll be back.

Another one of the best is the famous Cavalry Club in Atholl Place. The place oozes charm and sophistication and has some of the most alarmingly well-prepared dishes I've ever come across. It's a little more expensive than some, but if like me you don't much mind what you pay if you enjoy the experience then it's maybe the best in town.

It must have changed a great deal since then - it's a very comfortable place indeed. As for the service, perhaps we were pampered. We were there fairly early and it was quite quiet.

I find the Verandah's food generally good but the Cavaly Club has an edge to it. The service is out of this world and the dishes don't actually taste as thought they are made from a vat marked 'BASIC CURRY SAUCE'. :-)

Hi Simon,
The Spices of Life was there last time I looked, and is just over the
road from the Taj Express.
I preferred Taj Express, friends preferred the other one - as to which is actually better... shrug :-)

The CC is the second best place to eat curry in the area, IMO. Believe it or not, the best curries in the Known Universe emanate from the Shish Mahal in Musselburgh (just beside the town hall). Why this little, innocuous, out of the way place should make curries so fabulous is beyond me, but they have found themselves in the Good Food Guides time after time. Their Chicken Nentara is out of this world.

I just don't remember the Verandah making anything so good that I felt compelled to go back there. It's no that it's bad, it's just that it's relatively uninteresting. It's quite expensive as well. (Mind you, so is the Cavalry Club!)

Small world - I work just about two minutes from the Far Pav. I understand that it is *substantially* better than it used to be, although I haven't ever ventured in.

A Musselburgh colleague recommends this too.

I stick to my local joints: the Pataka, Kings Balti (now renamed Balti Kings!) and sometimes the Kalpna. Something different for veggies. The other two are OK.

I wanted to post about this place a few days ago but couldn't remember the name. I would have to agree with you , possibly the best curries in the world! A tiny restaurant with naff 70's decor (red flock wallpaper, plastic flowers, the lot) but the food is to die for. Highly reccomended!

Your colleague is right. I must also recommend their vindaloo and a madras that is bursting with more flavour than I've ever had in a curry,
*anywhere*! They also have a extremely good range of vegetarian dishes, something that not everyone can boast.

I thought I had lost the Kings Balti last time I looked. Thanks for the update!
