OK - after an excellent weekend and in case anyone else should need the information - we found a great cafe-bar/restaurant near the university and cathedral called Brown's.

Varied menu including vegetarian and vegan options, and a sensible fixed price menu with all bar one or two special meals at £5 each. I like that, as I can make a free choice of dishes whereas in more conventional places I tend to choose according to price!

Not sure if booking would have been an option, but they were perfectly able to cater for a crowd of us descending all at once.
