BROWNS - RESTAURANT & BAR: 3-4, Duke St. This in one of the most down to earth places in Brighton, pressure free and a feeling of sophistication without a strain on your pocket. The food is excellent and the service is second to none, I mean second to none, all workers must have been told that customers always come first and treat them as you would like to be treated. I've had several experiences in here. Once I order a red wine and just wondered why they had Chianti on there wine list, I've always had very bad Chianti's before and thought it was one of Italy's cheaper exports. The Barman brought a little in a glass and it's the best I've ever tasted, without any interference. I've been here lots of times, it's a place to meet friends and not to feel you're too romantic with a friend, compared to other restaurants, which just open in the evening, but a place to relax and to be noticed in. You find that in the afternoon lots of lady friends meet to chat about their life's as ladies do and quiet a lot of tourist float in and out. In the evenings a classier and mainly older crowds enter and the place become busier, transforming to a tinted, candlelight affair. I like the concept here, no booking of tables, first come, first serve. What happens is you use the bar two doors along and then get call when your table is available. The garlic bread ( 1.55 ) is quite expensive for what it is, the Caesar salad ( 3.35 ) is a must and if you haven't had oysters ( 5.95 ) before it worth the experience . Their main courses and the chefs special for the day are excellent and prices include French fries, steak chips or Mashed potato. The Steak, mushroom and Guinness pie ( 7.75 ) is worth the money, even if this is the main course you choose to analyze this place without breaking the bank this is worth the start. The Scottish fillet steak ( 14.95 ) is a must and one of the best place for a fillet steak I've tried in Brighton, apart from La Capannina on 15, Madeira place. Venison steak is also worth your first experience here, served in a peppered sauce, the meat is tender and moist and goes down well. They also offer a 5.00 lunch of Cumberland sausages with mashed potatoes and shallots gravy between ( 12.00 to 4.30 pm ) All the deserts I feel are brought in, ranging from Bread and butter pudding ( 3.35 ), Sticky toffee pudding ( 3.35 ), Crème Brulee ( 3.35 ) ,Hot fudge Brownies ( 3.35 ), Pear Tarte Tatin with clotted cream ( 3.35 ), Chocolate Moussecake ( 3.35 ) and Apple and Blackberry Crumble with custard (3.35 ). They have a café bar two doors along where you can relax, have a lager, good wine, coffee and a sandwich ranging from about ( 4.00 - 7.00 pounds ) although the afternoon. In the evening here you find lots of younger people just drinking and talking. It's is a great place to meet the sophisticated people. The restaurant has a comfortable air about it and makes you feel at home, without noticing the service of a waitress. The wine list is extensive with bottles ranging from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany, Spain and France. They sell Bottled lagers, white, red, Sparkling wines in sizes only of 175ml and Champagne here, from Heineken ( 2.05 ), Becks ( 2.35 ), Budweiser ( 2.45 ), Chardonnay ( 12.95 / bottles ), Cabernet / Shiraz ( 3.15 / glass, 7.75 / half bottles to 13.95 / bottle. Bollinger special Cuvee NV ( 45.00 ) and Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque ( 75.00 ). PS : Does anyone know why the Spare Ribs were taken from the menu.
